The aim of this seminar is to provide those interested with a general overview of the world of academic publishing and its protagonists. How is the individual student, doctoral candidate or advanced researcher at [TU Clausthal] connected to this market?

Practical questions such as
(a) what is the best way to publish? or
(b) what options does the current Open Science model offer me? will be addressed. But also questions such as: Does this publishing world offer me a possible career or even a relevant scientific field? should be illuminated.

In the first part of the seminar (23.05.2025), a compact overview of the protagonists, i.e. the scientific authors, reviewers, readers and editors, in the broad context of publishing with its scientific publishers & societies, the universities with their libraries, and the (inter)national research societies.

In the second part of the seminar (23.05.2025), Dr. Wahls outlines the development of the science policy framework of the last 25 years, in particular the paradigm shift from the former subscription publication model ["the user pays"] to the new open science model ["the creator
pays"], and its influences on the protagonists mentioned in the first part.

In the third, interactive part (24.05.2025), Dr. Wahls explores the practical and often very complex question of every young scientist, e.g. how and where best to publish their own work. What publication formats are available, and under what peer review conditions? Which copyright model should be chosen? At the end of the two-day seminar, Dr. Wahls will attempt to outline both media science and professional options within the academic publishing world.
